Blue coral, scientifically known as Heliopora coerulea, is a rare and fascinating type of coral found in the Indo-Pacific region. It's notable for its unique blue color, both in its polyps and skeleton, which is unusual for corals. Blue coral has also remained largely unchanged in form for millions of years.
Key Properties
• Unique Biology: Also known as blue ridge coral, it is an Indo-Pacific octocoral that produces a rigid, heavy skeleton made of aragonite instead of flexible protein.
• Natural Color: Its distinct blue color comes from iron salts absorbed into the mineral skeleton as it grows, which remains visible even after the organism dies or is cleaned.
• Conservation Status: Because wild reefs face severe pressures from climate change and warming oceans, Heliopora coerulea is listed on CITES Appendix II to control international trade.
• Maintenance: Natural decorative pieces are delicate and typically cleaned gently with compressed air or mineral oil to enhance their unique textures
Ethically farmed blue coral is real blue coral (Heliopora coerulea) cultivated through sustainable aquaculture or mariculture rather than harvested from wild, endangered ocean reefs
How Ethical Farming Works
• Coral Gardening: Farmers take small fragments or larvae from existing colonies and grow them safely in protected ocean nurseries or land-based aquaculture facilities.
• Relieving Reef Pressure: Cultivation allows collectors, designers, and hobbyists to acquire natural specimens for decorative or display use without damaging fragile wild marine ecosystems.
• Supporting Communities: Responsible mariculture programs provide sustainable income for coastal villages in regions like the Philippines and Southeast Asia while encouraging local marine stewardship.

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):
While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:
• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.
• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.
