Bumblebee Jasper is a striking, vibrantly colored stone featuring bold bands of yellow, orange, black, and gray that resemble the stripes of a bumblebee.

Key Facts & Composition

• Not a True Jasper: It does not contain quartz or chalcedony. It is primarily a fibrous, carbonate-rich rock (mostly calcite or travertine) formed from volcanic material and hot springs.
• Origin: Found almost exclusively around active volcanic regions in West Java, Indonesia (such as Mount Papandayan and Mount Ciremai).
• Color Source: Its bright yellow and orange hues come from minerals like sulfur, realgar, and orpiment, while the dark bands come from materials like pyrite or manganese oxides.
• Hardness: It has a Mohs hardness of about 4 to 5, making it relatively soft compared to true jasper.

This is what Justin from MI had to say about our Bumblebee Jasper rough: Incredible item and the best packing job I have ever seen. Communication is always great also. Absolutely love this shop!

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):

While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:

• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.

• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.

Safety & Handling

• Toxicity Warning: The stone can contain natural arsenic and sulfur compounds.
• Safe Handling: Polished pieces are generally safe for display or gentle handling, though you should wash your hands after handling unpolished or raw specimens.
• Avoid Inhalation: Never cut, grind, or polish this stone without proper respiratory protection, as the dust is toxic. Many geologists recommend avoiding wearing it as direct skin-contact jewelry or letting it degrade in sunlight.
