The measurements provided are at the widest part and are close approximations. The piece(s) shown in the pictures is what will be shipped to you.
Some pictures are taken with the stone wet while others are dry. These are rough, not polished pieces.
California Gulch in Leadville, Colorado, is world-renowned for its rich mining history, but it is also a fascinating geological site where dendritic pyrolusite (manganese oxide) crystals form striking, tree-like patterns on local igneous rocks. California Gulch spans roughly 18 square miles across Lake County. It is famous for kicking off the 1860 Colorado Gold Rush before transitioning into massive silver, lead, and zinc booms.
The Geology Behind the "Dendritic" Formations
• The Leadville Mining District sits on a complex basement of Precambrian rock and Paleozoic sediments heavily intruded by Tertiary-period igneous porphyries and rhyolite formations.
• Dendritic Patterns: The dark, branch-like or fern-like patterns found on the fracture surfaces of these stones are not fossilized plants. They are mineral deposits of manganese oxide (specifically pyrolusite).
• How They Form: Mineral-rich water flows through microscopic fractures and bedding planes in the rhyolite or porphyry rock. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind crystalline manganese structures that grow outward in a natural, branching fractal pattern.
This is what Emily from WI had to say about our dendritic gemstone rough: Beautiful! Exactly as pictured, and even more stunning in person. Safely packed and promptly shipped.

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):
While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:
• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.
• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.
