Mahogany obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass distinguished by its dark black base intermixed with rich reddish-brown swirls and stripes.
In addition to its decorative use, obsidian has been used to make smooth and sharp surgical blades and arrowheads due to its lack of cleavage and acute edges when broken. Stone Age people used obsidian for weapons and implements, Native Americans formed it into arrowheads and the Incans used it for weapons, mirrors and masks.
What It Is & How It Forms
• Composition: An extrusive igneous rock formed when silica-rich lava cools too rapidly to develop a crystalline structure.
• Color Source: The distinctive red-and-brown banding comes from iron oxide, hematite, or magnetite inclusions trapped within the glass.
• Hardness: Measures 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.
• Locations: Commonly found in volcanic regions, notably in Mexico, the United States, Japan, and parts of Central and South America.
This is what Jim from IA had to say about our Mahogany Obsidian rough: really great color and texture. I love mohogany obsidian. This is high quality and delivered quickly.

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):
While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:
• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.
• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.
