Moroccan agate is a type of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) prized for its vibrant colors, intricate banding, and unique formation types found primarily across the Atlas Mountains and Saharan edges of Morocco.

Key Characteristics & Geology

• Formation: Formed within Triassic-aged basaltic rocks and volcanic cavities through silica-rich fluids. It appears both as rounded nodules and as "seam" or "vein" agate growing along fractures.
• Colors & Patterns: Features saturated hues including fiery red, orange, golden yellow, pink, brown, white, gray, and rare green. Iron oxides like hematite and goethite drive the warm red and orange bands.
• Varieties: Common styles include banded agates, moss agates, plume agates, flame agates, and Baba/Ziral agates.
• Origin: Commonly sourced from volcanic and basaltic rock formations around Kerrouchen, Khenifra Province, Sidi Rahal, Aouli, and the High Atlas Mountains.

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):

While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:

• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.

• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.
