Physical & Mineral Properties

• Composition: Formed primarily of silicon dioxide (quartz) intergrown with altered amphibole and limonite fibers.
• Mohs Hardness: Rates a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it durable for daily wear.
• Chatoyancy: The signature shifting light effect happens because parallel fibrous structures reflect light like a cat's eye.
• Colors: Typically golden-yellow, brown, reddish-brown, and blue (known as hawk's eye or blue tiger's eye).
• Major Localities: Commonly mined in South Africa (Northern Cape) and Western Australia.

This is what Brittney from UT had to say about our Hedgehogs: Love this little hedgehog. It’s super cute. Came well packaged!

Safety Advisory (California Proposition 65):

While completely safe to display on a shelf or wear as finished pieces, many raw mineral specimens naturally contain toxic elements, heavy metals, or glass-like structures (such as copper, arsenic, lead, or silica). To ensure your safety, please follow these responsible ownership and lapidary protocols:

• Basic Handling: Always wash your hands immediately after touching raw minerals and never ingest minerals.

• Lapidary Safety: When cutting or drilling, always use specialized safety equipment, including wet-cutting machinery, proper ventilation, and appropriate respirators or masks to avoid inhaling toxic dust or fumes.

Key Safety Facts

• Everyday Wear: Finished pieces like rings, pendants, and bracelets are non-toxic and safe for skin contact.
• Cutting and Grinding Risk: The main danger occurs only when cutting, sawing, shaping, or polishing the raw stone, which can release hazardous asbestos dust into the air and requires proper respiratory protection.
• Not for Ingestion or Drinks: Using tiger's eye as a "whiskey stone" or putting it in consumable liquids is unsafe, as fluids or alcohol can potentially break down the stone or leach micro-inclusions.
